Event Report | Building Local & Global Web Companies @ UnConference Singapore
+8* Event reportsPublished July 19, 2009 at 9:53 am Comments OffIn May we were invited to speak at the UnConference organized by e27 in Singapore. It welcomed several hundreds entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs-to-be, investors and web industry people.
In addition to moderating a panel on “Innovation in Asia” – which focused on highlighting the not-so-straight road and little known ideas, such as how to get your first batch of users (often an untold story), we made a presentation on “Globalizing Startups”. We are based in Asia and deal with innovation, but do not buy into the idea of “Asian” vs. “Western” innovation.
The videos of our presentation and the panel are here: keynote, 40min – panel 1-2.
From our point of view, it is all a matter of IT infrastructure, GDP/capita, ecosystems, access to talent and capital. It does not matter so much where ideas are “born”, but it is important to understand what makes them they grow. During the event, we found surprising that Singapore-based companies seem to be relying a lot on government funding – in a similar way that Chinese startups used to consider venture capital almost as a business model.
